Non-toxic alternatives to toxic cleaning products

This list was a great idea given to me by @dalydose after he read my review of the EWG School Cleaning Supplies Report. Below is a list of companies that make great non-toxic cleaning products. Note that while they are non-toxic, these products are not edible! They are not organic, except for one. One of them uses some sort of preservative in small amounts, regardless, these are much better than your average toxic fume potion. :) You don't have to hold your breath when you clean with these products. The #2, you can actually drink!

There are some mainstream green cleaning products as well, but I don't really trust them for one simple reason - they are the ones who make the chemical cleaners as well!

Seventh Generation

This company was one of the first to step on the green scene. They have everything from toilet paper (recycled) to laundry detergent.

Activeion

This one is quite unusual and quite an investment. But it will replace all your other chemicals and you will never buy cleaning products again because you just fill it with water! This device uses ionized water to clean, amazing... As soon as I get to try this I'll be sure to review it on Lunch! At $169 (household version) it is an investment that will pay for itself in a few months. Also a great option for green hotels, schools, and commercial applications.

Sun & Earth

I like this company because their products are readily available at my local stores. I am a loyal fan of their laundry detergent that I think works better than Tide, and I love their dish washing liquid. They do have everything you might need though. Very well priced too. They do however have some preservative in their products, I want to find out exactly what it is.

Ecostore USA

I've tried their dish soap, it is very gentle on hands but cuts grease well. The Pure Oxygen Whitener is nice too. I haven't tried other products, but they have a lot of options.

Baking Soda

Good old baking soda. This is actually my primary cleaning tool, I have yet to find something cheaper! It does wonders to toilets and any kind of tile. Cleans my oven like a charm, even all of the baked on grease! Great for odors in the trash, diaper pail, and fridge. Add some vinegar for fizz and extra cleaning power.

Thanks for the list. I can go ahead and give the baking soda a shot without making a trip to the store. Could it replace my Comet for countertop, tub, stovetop and sink cleaning???

Yes, I use baking soda for all those things you mentioned. Just sprinkle it on and give it a light scrub. If you have baked on grease on the stove just add vinegar or lemon and let it sit a few minutes. I love cleaning with it, just knowing that it is not toxic and I don't need to hold my breath or air out the house. :) Actually, my husband is usually the one that cleans the sink and toilet with it and he said only good things about it!

Love this list. Perfect idea. Don't forget the time-honored bathroom cleaner - diluted vinegar! Sounds gross but works wonders.

Great list! I too care deeply for the environment, and though I already use some of the items in your list, I will keep my eyes open for the others, so that I may try them as well.

On a side note, I like baking soda as well. I use Bob's Red Mill brand though, as opposed to Arm & Hammer, because Bob's does not test on animals.

Thank you so much for the comment! I did not know that about baking soda, thanks for letting me know. I use non-toxic products first of all because it is healthier for my family, but being good for the environment is a nice perk as well! :)

That is very true. I'm glad that Seventh Generation now has television commercials. Hopefully these eco-friendly cleaning products will become more mainstream.
